Chanen was construction manager for a $20 million, 100,000-sq.-ft. addition, plus a 15,000-sq.-ft. renovation, to the Arizona Cancer Center. This project more than doubled the size of the facility. The Center, located on The University of Arizona campus in Tucson, conducts multi-disciplinary medical research.
During the planning of the project, Chanen assisted the University and the architects with preparation of the design schedule, provided construction cost estimates and project budgets. Chanen also facilitated the selection of materials, equipment, systems and methods of construction, managing design phase submittals, owner's review/approvals. Accurate budget and cash flow management were crucial since this project was financed through gifts and contributions.
The construction phase required precise coordination and communication with 20 constituent groups, including the University, Arizona Cancer Center, neighborhood groups and departments to allow continuous access to critical care facilities and to minimize any adverse impact on adjacent users. Evening and weekend remodeling work in the existing building allowed the center to continue normal operations. Since the new building is attached to the existing building, great care had to be taken to ensure that laboratory work and patient treatment were not compromised by construction.- ClientUNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
