Univision / Chanel 33
Univision Television Studios
Phoenix, Arizona
Chanen Construction Company built the award winning Univision television station in Phoenix, Arizona. Univision is Chanel 33, the largest television network in the US.
This project has been honored as one of the 18 greatest Architectural Achievements in Arizona by the American Institute of Architects. In commemorating their 150th year aniversary, AIA recognized 18 projects of architectural excellence that best represented Arzona's past and present.
The Univision campus is approximately 35,000-sq-ft. of multi-functional space housing station offices, the on-air broadcast studio, technical and production electronics areas, as well as naturally landscaped outdoor areas designed for outdoor remote broadcasting and staff and group entertainment. A separate underground parking garage hides beneath the site.
Exterior building construction utilizes rammed earth, which is an ancient construction technique designed to make use of native earth for part of the building's structural elements. A new specification and inspection section was incorporated into city code to coincide with the first commercial rammed earth structure in Phoenix. Cor-ten metal cladding, along with rammed earth exterior, give the building a strikingly modern appearance that also blends with the natural colors surrounding it.

AZ Dept of Revenue
AZ Department of Revenue
Phoenix, Arizona
Chanen's goal as construction manager for this nine-story office building with two sub-basements was to create an attractive, cost effective structure that would meet the Department's advanced electronic requirements.
Scheduling was a critical factor in order to accommodate the Department's desired occupancy date. A floor was completed every eight working days under an aggressive concrete schedule. The project was completed ahead of schedule and within budget. Department personnel began occupying the building two months early.
The $15 million, 200,000-sq.-ft. building has a number of special features to improve efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance appearance. For example, the cooling tower for the building's mechanical system is built as an architectural waterfall. A high-technology data center for processing tax returns and a fiber optic trunk system, which speed voice and data communications throughout the building, is also incorporated into the design.
The lobby is one of the few areas of the building open to the public. Durability is key in this area. A sophisticated security plan was developed to protect sensitive data and to safeguard valuables. A covered walkway connects the building to an adjacent 530-space above-grade, open parking structure.- ClientSTATE OF ARIZONA
