The $15.3 million Camel Point Urban Complex is a 145,662-sq.-ft., four-story office building with a three-level underground parking structure for 375 cars. A 4,500-sq.-ft. seven-story glassed-in atrium incorporates two observation elevators and a three-story waterfall. It provides the focal point for the building's interior with nearby Camelback Mountain as a backdrop.
The original design called for a foundation of grade beams and slabs on grade. However, Chanen's value engineering analysis determined that the concrete mat foundation should be cast in a single pour in order to save time and money. The 6,000- cu.-yd. pour was completed in 32 hours - a record at that time for Arizona.
The single pour was cheaper than four smaller pours since suppliers had to be mobilized and traffic controlled only once. Due to the location of the site, this could be done only during a weekend. Smaller-scale pours thus would have taken a month rather than just a day.
